Exterior facade painting: from preparation to final review
Facade painting combines risks from work at height, coatings and pedestrian movement below. Conditions can differ even between opposite sides of the same building; assess each work area and explain changes in the daily briefing.
Illustrative site situation
Illustrative situation: the crew cleans the north facade in the morning and paints the south facade in the afternoon. Reusing the morning TBM without changes may miss new pedestrian routes and wind direction.
Original hypothetical example, not an actual incident.
01Before work
- 1Identify today's facade, height, access equipment and pedestrian routes for each area.
- 2Have the relevant competent people check access equipment and protective gear under applicable rules.
- 3Review the actual coating safety data for inhalation, skin and fire hazards.
- 4Establish and inspect ground-level exclusion zones, including routes used by residents and other crews.
02During work
- 1Reassess controls when work location, weather or equipment changes.
- 2Stop the affected activity if someone enters the falling-object exclusion zone; restore controls first.
- 3Monitor powered tools and hoses, following the site's emergency procedure if defects emerge.
03Records and follow-up
- 1Work area and changes to the risk assessment
- 2Hazards and safeguards explained in the day's TBM
- 3People responsible for equipment and PPE checks, and unresolved defects
- 4Reported hazards, corrective action and its subsequent verification
